Being a part of these beautiful projects gave me a lot of pride, and drive, to work my way up as i did, to run some of these jobs during my apprenticeship and into my early years as a tradesman.
After some years I took the leap into another career dream of flying helicopters.
I gained my Commercial Helicopter pilot licence and started another whole apprenticeship again. Working in this industry brought me amazing experiences and great joy over the 5 years, flying and ground assisting in a range of different fields, including search and rescue, agricultural, fire fighting, pest control and scenic flights.
I did however, always end up getting my toolbelt back on. In the quiet seasons I was tasked with altering the hangar, building a new office, and built my own house at nights and on weekends. This work kept my hand and head in the trade. These jobs and the fact I was the go-to builder within the team, it meant it was on me to run the projects. From design and build, to project managing and on the tools. My time during these busy years helped me gain a wide range of skills, and a huge appreciation for a safe workplace, as this is also very important around helicopters.
I missed Dunedin and had met my wife, so in 2015 I decided to return and start my own business, Kennedy Building Ltd. Life is busy running the business, but a work life balance is also important to us so we do try and spend time with friends or I get out for a fly now and then to keep my hand in.
